           They can’t have children, Abby said. It’s stupid, selfish, irresponsible, knowing that any day one, or both, of them might go to work and never come home.

            Connor didn’t argue. He never argues.

            But sometimes she catches the happy sparkle of hope in his eyes when he sees small children playing. Until he looks at her and the hope vanishes, replaced by something that Abby can’t stand to see, and that makes her turn away and bury her own feelings deep down.

            Those are the nights when Connor holds her close, but his silence says more than words ever could.
