fanfic: 'Following Orders' and 'Arachnophobia' - athene
fanfic: 'Following Orders' and 'Arachnophobia'

Two drabbles for the Primeval 100 'Ryan' challenge. And see... I am entirely capable of writing drabbles that don't have Connor in them. I was starting to worry that he kept appearing, regardless of who the drabble was supposed to be about.

Title: Following Orders

Author: Athene

Fandom: Primeval

Characters: Ryan, Cutter

Rating: PG

Warnings: none

Spoilers: Episode 1.

Challenge: Primeval 100 ‘Ryan’ challenge

Disclaimer: Not mine. ITV and Impossible Pictures own them.

AN. Takes place towards the end of episode 1, still in the forest.

Ryan was clearing up after the gorgonopsid rampage when Cutter came to find him. His apology for his stubborn behaviour in the Permian was succinct, and faintly embarrassed.

Ryan just nodded. If Cutter wanted an apology about the concussion, he was going to be disappointed.

“One question.” Cutter hesitated. “If I hadn’t seen sense, would you really have stayed?”

            “I wasn’t leaving without you.”

It was an ambiguous answer, and they both knew it.

            “Well, thanks, Captain Ryan.”

            “You too, Professor.”

Ryan smiled, relieved that Cutter didn’t know how close he had come to getting himself knocked unconscious twice in one day.

Title: Arachnophobia

Author: Athene

Fandom: Primeval

Characters: Ryan

Rating: 12

Warnings: swearing

Spoilers: Episode 2

Challenge: Primeval 100 ‘Ryan’ challenge

Disclaimer: Not mine. ITV and Impossible Pictures own them.

AN. Takes place during the Special Forces scene in the underground.

He’s not arachnophobic. He’s not. And even if he was, he wouldn’t admit it. Certainly not to his men. Certainly not right now.

            Ryan looks up, and freezes.

Spiders. Fucking enormous spiders. The green of the night vision only makes them look more alien and sinister.

Suddenly they are dropping, and instinct and training and adrenaline kick in, and he doesn’t have time to think about how horrible and creepy and bloody big they are. Not until after he’s given the order to pull out.

            He’s not arachnophobic.

Although he has a disturbing suspicion that might be about to change.

I love both of these, but the second one is my favourite. Me thinks the big tough soldier might be slightly in denial about his horrible eight-legged foes! *g* I was actually quite impressed that none of the soldiers screamed like a girl and ran away when they saw those things *shudders*

I really need to write something for this challenge... *goes off in search of a plot bunny*

Thanks. The second one can probably be blamed on Munchkin's picspam with the goggles, because that scene was clearly on my mind when I was trying to come up with something for this challenge. And that bit in the episode where he's talking to Cutter afterwards and describing them as "horrible little..." and I thought; he's just a little too freaked out about this considering he's meant to be Captain Brave and Heroic. I wonder....

And then I wrote fic about arachnophobia, which is in no way me channelling my own phobia. Honest. (yeah, right - I'm the biggest screaming arachnophobe ever).

Thanks. *anyone* would have nightmares after having huge spiders drop on their heads like that.

Loved both of these!!

Munchkin's picspams seem to have inspired a lovely resurgence of Ryan/Nick, which is certainly to be encouraged :)

And hey, who isn't freaked by spiders???????

Cool, thanks.

There should definitely be more Nick/Ryan. *looks hopefully at people who write smut fic*

Personally, I'm entirely in agreement with the soldier who lost it and tried to shoot the spiders. If I saw one that big and happened to be holding an assault rifle at the time, I would have emptied the whole bloody clip into the nasty eight legged thing!

Number 1 is cute, because it's so true. Ryan would have slugged him again and thrown him through the anomaly if it came down to it... *g*

But number 2 is wonderful. Creepy, horrible, and wonderful. And matches Ryan's expressions during the scene perfectly.

Nice to know you liked, especially considering the second one is probably down to your picspam.

I was re-watching the scene in ep 1 with Ryan and Nick in front of the anomaly in the Permian, and the line where Nick says, "Well what do you want to do? Shoot me?" and you can just see Ryan thinking, 'don't bloody tempt me.' But yeah, if it came down to it I suspect he would have whacked Nick over the head again, and then faced the consequences of bringing him back unconscious. These scientists do make his life difficult, don't they?

Poor Ryan - those giant spiders would be enough to give anyone arachnophobia.

Both of these are excellent - the ending to Following Orders was funny and Arachnophobia sounds exactly like Ryan would be thinking right then - great job! :)

Ryan is fun, especially when he has that 'bloody scientists' expression on his face. But he did look a tiny bit freaked out by those giant spiders, didn't he?

Love them, but think the 2nd is my favourite... Ryan scared of spiders!

hee, it was that reaction in 1.2 when he came out of the underground and described them as 'nasty, horrible...' and at that moment I think half the fandom decided he was arachnophobic. Poor Ryan.
