“What the hell were you thinking?” Stephen yelled.

“I was trying to save people. In fact, I was saving people,” Connor snapped back. He was honestly bewildered. For all of thirty seconds he had felt like the hero of the hour – until Stephen had rounded on him and started shouting.

“You were trying to fight off two raptors with nothing more than a large sick. It looked to me like you were trying to get yourself killed.”

“So what was I supposed to do? Stand by and let them eat the innocent civilians while I waited for backup? Sod that!”

“And what if backup hadn’t come? What if I hadn’t come to bail you out? Again!”

            “Fine. Next time don’t bother.”

Connor turned and stormed off, seething. It had been his moment. His chance to show them all that he could be a hero as well. But no, Stephen ‘everyone look at me I’m the tall dark and handsome hero’ Hart had to come along and steal his thunder, and then make him look like an idiot in front of everyone. It wasn’t bloody fair.

A hand caught his shoulder and Connor spun round, flailing an arm at him.

Stephen wordlessly pulled him into a hug that silenced any further thought of protest in Connor’s mind.

“Next time, be more careful,” Stephen murmured as he finally let go.

He quickly turned and walked away, leaving Connor to flap in confusion, and with a vague feeling of annoyance that Stephen had managed to get the last word again.
