posting query - athene
posting query
I have a quick query that I'm hoping someone far better with technology than me may be able to help with (particularly the 'Primeval crowd' as fredbasset calls it!)

Last time I posted fanfic, I made two separate posts, one to Primeval_ITV and another to Primeval_Fanfic.   This meant that the comments posted on one community were seaparte from comments on the other community, and had all the associated faffing of posting twice.

Question - how do I do the link thing and post fanfic here on my livejournal, and link it to the communities rather than going through the rigmarole of posting twice or three times to different comunities/livejournals?

I had a look at the FAQ, but was left none the wiser as to how to actually do it.

Any advice, please?

I've got more fanfic ready to go, and and want to get it posted.

Current Location: bedroom
Current Mood: annoyed annoyed
Current Music: evanescence

Sorry, I haven't got the answer, but I'm really glad you've asked the question, because I'd like to know the answer as well.

I'm never quite sure about posting anything vaguley vulgar to Primeval_itv as the rules say no posting stuff like that behind a cutm but only via a link and I haven't a clue how to do anything else!

Here's hoping for the answer ........and soon, as I'd like to read more you your stuff, but I agree, cross-posting is a faff!!!!!!

I thought that's what you were already doing? The latest instalment of your Ryan saga (the one in the Home Office) looks like I'm viewing your live journal if I access it from Primeval_fanfic. And it has the same comments whether I read it from Primeval_fanfic or your livejournal.

I suspect it's something really obvious that I'm missing here, and I'm just having a random attack of techno fear.

BTW, I will get round to commenting on your Rome threads soon, I just haven't actually watched any of series two yet, and don't want to read spoilers. Must catch up at the weekend.

No, all I'm doing is posting behind a cut. I think there is another way, but I don't know or use it, as the Primeval_itv site specifically says don't post smut behind a cut, which is why I put my smutty stuff elsewhere as I don't know how to do the link thingy. I suspect Entangled_Now knows how, as she's got some snazzy links on her own site, as I recall.

Still Puzzled!

Now I'm just really confused. I hope it's not something monumentally obvious like selecting the community at the same time as the live journal when I post the update.

May just post the current fic the faffy way tonight, and try to work it out later.

If the posting goes horribly wrong it's because I decided to experiment...

What I do is post first to my journal, then just copy the whole post, using my old enemy, control V, and paste it into a post to the community, so all I have to do is type the heading. You can then use the same copy, to post to another community the same way. When it works and doesn't foul up, it's pretty quick. But I'm not sure whether that is a cut or a link .....

I'm pretty hopeless at the teccie stuff. (As you can tell by the sad absence of an icon!)

Look forward to reading later :)

Okay, I'm going to try and explain it without it getting muddled, but I'm not making any promises! Also, there may be (and probably is!) a simpler way than the way I do it, but this is my method.

1. Post the post in your own journal (obviously!)

2. Go to that post's page in the journal and make a note of (or copy) the URL for it.

3. Write your new post for the community you want to post it to.

4. Highlight the text you want to use as your link.

5. When you highlight it a button should light up on the tool bar. It looks like a globe with a paperclip in front of it. It's to the right of the font size box (this is in rich text, btw)

6. Press this button. A box should appear where you can type in (or paste) the URL for your entry. This will create your link.

7. Post the new entry to the community.

Hope this helps, and that this is what you were actually getting at! You still have to post to each community, but not the whole story each time, and as you point out, all your comments will be together in one place!

Also, fredbassett, I thought you were using the link thingy already too. I was sure I'd clicked into your journal from the primeval_fanfic comm on previous occasions.

Thank you very much.

I suspected it would be somthing along those lines, but didn't know the intricacies of it, and was horribly afraid of getting it *so* wrong that everybody on the Primeval Comms would just laugh at me or something.

Right, will print this post out so I have a reference to follow, and give it a go.

Ducking for cover may be advisable while I experiment. Here goes...

To be honest, I haven't much of a clue what I'm doing! I tried to describe it above, but I'll have a go at following your method as well :)

And I will get an icon one day, honest! *wanders off vaguely to continue latest Stephen/Ryan epic ...*

*bounces around the room and does a happy dance*

Thanks for the help guys.

Still have to post it to Primeval_ITV, but it seems to have worked at Primeval_fanfic.

*more enthusiatic happy gestures*

Yep, it worked!

*sends congratulatory e-wave* *and e-cake*

Okay, now I'm going to try to talk you through setting up an icon.

First, find a few piccies off the internet or from the masses of Primeval icons posted at Primeval_ITV. Save/download these to your hard drive.

Then, go into Profile.

Manage Userpics

where it says 'upload a new userpic':

go for the option: from file[ ] browse

hit the browse button and find the downloaded piccies on your hard drive.

select a picture

in the bit where it says keywords, just a name for the icon, eg the keyword for my icon is just 'deinonychus'

where it says comments, this can be just a description, or if you have selected an icon created by someone else you can put their username here to credit it to them if you use it.

there is also a 'save settings' button somewhere at the bottom of the list of icons, I think you may have to hit this as well at this stage.

If you have more than one icon saved, it will probably automatically use the first as the default, unless you select one of the others, and then 'save settings' again.

It's been a week or so since I did mine, so my memory might be a bit dodgy. Good luck

Wondeful, thanks :) I will try and have one by next week, I promise. (Ghastly busy weekend coming up, with precious little fic or play-time until Sunday, I'm afraid, starting with meetings tomorrow afternoon, followed by various "do's" that I'm committed to, and will probably enjoy eventually, but I have to give a speech at a lunch on Saturday, GROAN. Would much rather write, and read fic! But at least we'll be back on Saturday in time for Dr Who.

PS Am watching Sean Bean in Sharpe as well as writing at the moment. *thinks lustful thoughts*
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: June 28th, 2007 09:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Poor you.

I've got something on all day Saturday which will require a very early start (defeats the point of a weekend if you have to get up earlier than you do for work during the week!), but should be home in time for Doctor Who.

Sean Bean always induces lustful thoughts. I think it's the accent.

I wonder if it's a sign that I've been reading to much fic when my first thought on seeing you mention Sharpe was 'I wonder how to get a universe crossover of Sharpe with Primeval'?

You never know, he might get on well with Ryan (and if *that's* not an interesting mental image I don't know what is).
fredbassett From: fredbassett Date: June 28th, 2007 09:10 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes, same for me on Sat, unfortunately.

Oh god, Sharpe/Ryan, or even Sharpe/Stephen, *disolves into helpless hot sweat* The mental images are more than interesting .............
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: June 28th, 2007 09:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Hehe. I liked that visual place as well.

Must resist temptation to write Sharpe/Ryan. Must resist tempt...

Oops. Distracted by interesting visual place again.
fredbassett From: fredbassett Date: June 28th, 2007 09:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
Nah, give in, write shameless Sharpe/Ryan porn, I dare you :)

*goes back to lovely tempting visual place, full of tight trousers and sexy black combat gear*

Was having far too many Sharpe + Ryan action adventure ideas while standing at the bus stop (in the pouring rain) this morning. Will have to see what happens during my lunch break.

Hope you have a good lunch! *grins*
