The phone hadn’t rung.
His mother and grandparents were politely not mentioning it, everyone ignoring the unopened presents under the tree. By lunchtime they could have cut the tension with one of the antique bayonets that decorated the library.
It wasn’t the first time his father had been stationed abroad on Christmas Day. Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries; nothing was immune.
Truth be told (although he would never, ever, say it out loud), Hilary actually preferred it when his father wasn’t there, casting his formidable shadow over everything and everyone.
Still, for his mother’s sake, he wished the bloody phone would ring.
