Blood pounding in his ears, lungs screaming, he forced his aching legs to run faster. The others were close behind but that didn’t matter. He was winning.

He hurled himself across the finish line with a ragged cry of triumph.

“Well done, son!”

For a moment he dared to believe it was his own father with such pride in his voice. Then the boy opened his eyes and banished the daydream.

Of course his father wasn’t there. Work always took priority over his son’s sports day.

Hilary Becker swiped away the tears that dared ambush him.

Crying was for losers.
