Is Becker a Good Soldier? (A Teamfest Meta)

Back in January in the team fest Ryan squee thread, there was much discussion comparing Becker with Ryan, and it has to be said Becker generally came out worst. So, for this fest I decided to take a closer look at Becker's role as a Special Forces captain, provide a few comparisons with Ryan, and also look at the way Primeval treats the military in a more general sense.

Contains spoilers up to and including 5.6. Wordcount - 5200 words.

You did a great job with this, it's such a good analysis of Becker. I completely agree that Becker was more a replacement for Stephen than Ryan (although it must be said I didn't even particularly remember Ryan when I started S3, oops) and it shows in the role he has within the team. He also doesn't have the benefit of being played by someone who was actually in the military! No offense to Ben, but you just can't fake that.

I do generally wave off a lot of the more iffy things he does and blame it on sloppy writing as well as the attitude the show took towards the soldiers post S1, but I have also pretty much adopted your in-character explanation as my head-canon when I write. I feel like he does seem to want to prove himself, both because of his age and because he came in as a replacement (and then especially considering Cutter died so soon after Becker got to the ARC) and has daddy issues, so he is a bit more reserved and set apart from his men than Ryan was. Although, I do think he would still in actuality be upset when they got killed! He does like his moments of manpain, after all. *g*

Also, is it bad that I laughed when you mentioned he had an actual reaction to one of the men dying, that he might have actually liked that one? I am now imagining Becker thinking, oh, damn, actually knew that one's name.

Thanks! Yes, I completely agree, no amount of acting ability is going to compare with actual real life experience, escpecially when it comes to the little details, so Ben was never going to match up to Mark in that respect.

Becker does sometimes come across as overconfident and cocky, and I'd like to think that was more about him trying to project an image of himself as being in charge and in control to compensate for the fact that he doesn't look old enough to be in that position.

Lol! Yes, that's pretty much exactly what I thought as well. Or perhaps that one owed him a tenner... ;-)

I like your look at things from a completely different angle.

These are things I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. great!

I hadn't really noticed most of this before (I see Becker and my brain gets stuck on 'Ooooh, pretty'), but he did make a lot of mistakes. Or the writers did.

The idea that he was more of a Stephen replacement than a Ryan replacement makes a lot of sense, though.

Lol! 'Ooh, pretty,' is a perfectly understandable reaction to Becker. He was quite badly served by the writers, though.

Great meta! I think you've really hit the nail on the head with your conclusion!

thanks! He really didn't seem to be designed as your traditional military type character when you look at how he behaves and interacts with the team.

Interesting analysis of Becker's skills as a soldier. I think he matured a lot since season 3 and learnt not always to go by the book.

Yes, he's definitely loosened up a bit about following the rules by series 4 and 5, although there are still some things (like not going through anomalies) that he's quite adamant about.

Fascinating meta. Aside from his age, I hadn't given much thought to how implausible it would be for someone like Becker to be a military officer. Perhaps it would've been better if he'd been introduced without a military background, and had just been hired as a private security officer. Like you mentioned, he was more of a replacement for Stephen than Captain Ryan.

I also wonder if his being given a bigger role in the show towards the end of series 3 was more due to his popularity among the fans.

I certainly think the way his character changed and developed in series 4 and 5 was down to the fans' reactions to him.

I can see what they were trying to do with Becker as a soldier, but they just didn't handle the team of soldiers very well at all.

Excellent analysis! You make a lot of good points, especially about Becker replacing Stephen and not Ryan which I think is very true. And aw, to the last two lines :D

thanks. I do think Becker fits far more into the Stephen character 'niche' rather than Ryan, especially when you look at the way he behaves with the team and with the heroics.
