fic word count for 2009

Happy new year everyone. Since everyone else seems to be doing it. I decided to do a quick word count of the fic I've written this year (okay, it wasn't actually quick because it took ages for me to go through my masterlist and update the spreadsheet that I've been failing to keep up to date, but never mind).

Somewhat surprisingly my Primeval fanfic word count for 2009 is almost the same as 2008. Total words posted in 2009 was approx 80750, including two vs3 episodes which by themselves were 26900. That was spread over 32 standalone fics or chapters within a longer series, 43 drabbles, and the 2 vs3 episodes. The total for 2008 was 85070, so it's actually slightly less this year *pout*.

The big surprise was how many drabbles I've written this year. I was feeling bad because I thought I hadn't written many. Then I counted them and it turns out that my drabble total for 2009 (4300) is higher than the total for both 2007 and 2008 put together! Also I wrote a lot more 18 rated smut in 2009 than in previous years, including the Becker/Connor/Nick 'Need' mini series (9150 words in total). Obviously I'm blaming the Denial crowd for being bad influences!

Longest individual fic this year (not counting vs3 eps) was 'Not the End of the World' at 5700 (very closely followed by 'All the Trimmings' at 5600).

The disappointment of the year was that at the start of 2009 I was determined to write more Connor/Abby fic, but have spectacularly failed to do so. I've tried, but they never got finished. Right now my hard drive seems to be the place where unfinished C/A fic goes to die! Also, I've got 9000 words of unfinished Big Bang fic waiting for me to get back to it at some point.

And speaking of unfinished things, I'm off to make a start on the word count for 2010...

I think the one trend that I noticed was that the fics I wrote for other people as birthday fics or from prompts tended to be longer on average than the stuff I wrote simply because I wanted to.

The 'Need' series was an accident, it was supposed to be a one off Connor/Becker and it just grew a plot and wouldn't leave me alone.

Oh yes, I noticed that too. Working to other people's pairings sometimes came up with some cool stuff! So yay for presents :)

All the best fics eat you alive :)

Congratulations! *grins*

you've written some epics this year as well, haven't you? I think this year I seem to have written more individual fics, but on average they've been shorter in length than the fics I was writing in 2008. I suspect the epic Connor/Ryan series bulked out the previous years word counts a hell of a lot.

I just did my own post. *g* Most of my fics were as gifts, and I had 2 fics over 1500, 2 over 3000 amd another 2 over 5000!

I never seem to write what I'm determined to write at the beginning of the year either. Usually everything else but that.

Still that's a good word count!

It's not bad. I suspected I hadn't written as much this year, but it would have been nice to beat last years count. Oh well, if I actually manage to finish some of those unfinished fics I'll have a head start on the word count for 2010.

That's a very healthy word count. I'm impressed.
Need was awesome - such an angst-fest!
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 1st, 2010 01:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
I probably shouldn't be surprised how many people jumped all over Need, knowing how much everyone loves the angst round here. Apparently every year has to have some sort of Connor/soldier related angst - in previous years it was Connor/Ryan, this year it was Connor/Becker.

Well done, that woman! And I loved the Need series!

I think Need waa the surprise fic of the year for me. If you'd asked me this time last year I was convinced I could never write Connor with the new soldier because I was too stuck on Connor/Ryan. But then four months later there was this angsty, broken, screwed up, vaguely non-con love triangle with Becker and Connor and Nick. I didn't see that one coming, that's for sure.

LOL and YAY for bad influences! The Connor/Becker was great!!

deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 1st, 2010 03:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
I've tried Connor out with several new pairings this year, although Becker seems to be the most popular. I did rather enjoy writing him with Helen in that last couple of months as well, though, and may have to play with that pairing more often.

I think there's a lot of scope for Connor/Helen. It's an intriguing one.

Congrats on the word count :-) Everyone's been really productive this year, despite the ups and downs of the series itself - or perhaps because of it.

I knew I hadn't had a great year for fic writing, so much of what I wanted to write has been started but left unfinished. But it wasn't bad. Hopefully I'll actually manage to *finish* a few more things in 2010.

I so have to go and read the Need series again - possibly I'm saving it up for a special occasion...like hooray it's 2010 so I can read everything again, or something like that... *g*

Obviously I'm blaming the Denial crowd for being bad influences!

You say that like it's a bad thing... ;)
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 1st, 2010 04:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yep, Need seems to have been quite popular. I'm glad everyone took to Becker so much, I wasn't sure if people were going to want to write or read about the character considering how much people love Ryan, but that doesn't seem to have stopped anyone slashing the pretty new soldier once we'd met him in 2009.
fredbassett From: fredbassett Date: January 1st, 2010 04:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm very fond of our pretty new soldier boy. I very much hope we get to keep him.
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 1st, 2010 05:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
I hope so too, I did like his action heroics, even if all his men were a bit useless.
telperion_15 From: telperion_15 Date: January 1st, 2010 04:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
I thought our rule was 'if it moves, we'll slash it...'? *g*

Also, Becker's too pretty not to slash, and too polished not to want to muss up... ;)
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 1st, 2010 05:00 pm (UTC) (Link)
LOL, true, if it stands still for long enough someone will usually try to slash anyone with anyone/thing!

Heehee, yes, that hair just makes you want to make it all untidy and ruffled.

That's a really great word count. Well done, you!
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 2nd, 2010 09:24 am (UTC) (Link)
It would have been nice if I'd beaten last years total, but it wasn't far off so I'm not too bothered. Considering that there was a period in the middle of the year (after the news of the cancellation, I think) when I just didn't write anything for ages, it's kind of surprising that it's as high as it is, to be honest.
kristen_mara From: kristen_mara Date: January 2nd, 2010 05:07 am (UTC) (Link)

////The total for 2008 was 85070, so it's actually slightly less this year *pout*.////

Still a bloody good job though!

Here's hoping Becker gets to do great things on the show in the next season (heroic permanent death NOT being one of them...)
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 2nd, 2010 09:27 am (UTC) (Link)
ooh, yes, we don't want to lose our pretty captain, or any of them, come to that!

80,000 isn't bad, but I think my aim for 2010 is to get over 100,000. There will be a happy dance of joy if I manage that.
