drabble: Inevitable

Written for the Primeval 100 challenge 90 - Brave New World

Title: Inevitable
Author: Athene
Fandom: Primeval
Characters: Abby, Cutter, Lester, Connor
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Spoilers: none
Challenge: Brave New World
Word count: 100
Disclaimer: Not mine. ITV and Impossible Pictures own them.

The TV feed came through on the ADD monitor, and the crowded Atrium fell utterly silent.

For once Cutter and Lester had been united in their fight to prevent the inevitable, but they had failed. Their expressions now said far more than their last heated exchange. Abby could sense the tension in the room. The anticipation. The fear. Even Connor was unusually still. Abby reached across and squeezed his hand.

Nobody spoke as the barely credulous newsreader made the official announcement.

Yesterday they had been part of the Earth’s biggest secret. Tomorrow they would wake up in a new world.

Erk! You can't leave it there, madam! I want to read what happens next *g*.

I've no idea what happens next! Anarchy! Riots! The collapse of civilisation as we know it, maybe?

Oooh, very good use of the prompt.

And here was me thinking I'd waited till the last possible minute to post the next challenge! But as I already said, it's fine. It's only minutes apart after all :D

I'd had the idea for this almost as soon as I saw the prompt, but didn't get round to writing it until yesterday, and was literally still trying to beat it down to 100 words until the very last moment before I posted it. I nearly didn't bother when it got so late, but so far I've managed at least one drabble for each prompt in the new year, and I intend to keep aiming for at least one a week.

Right on the cusp of a huge change that will shake the world. Very atmospheric :)

this one really didn't want to be confined to just 100 words, it was quite an effort to make it into a drabble. I'm glad it still works. After spending over a day poking it and trying to edit it down, I was about to give upon it.

Oooh interesting. I like it.

this one was a quiet but extremely insistent bunny that kept demanding to be written as soon as I'd seen the prompt. Just another little 'what if...' idea.

Ooh interesting, really loving this take.

thanks. I love the format that they have now, with the secrecy and the tiny team working alone to deal with anomalies, but I keep thinking sooner or later there's going to be an anomaly and/or a creature in the wrong place at the wrong time and they just won't be able to cover it up any more.

Oh shit! That's brilliant. Brave new world indeed!

scary new world, I think. Depends how the population react, and I don't expect it will be pretty...

Excellent drabble.

Scary thoughts :-) I like this a lot. I'm surprised no one's really written anything much along these lines before.

I think everyone is currently happy to play with the scenario of the team being part of this secret organisation. It works for the show, and it works for fic, because it limits the need for many civilian OCs/bit parts.

Didn't someone say on a Denial chat thread a while ago that they had been thinking of a fic set in the future where the anomalies are general knowledge and the original team are on trial or something? That sounded like an interesting angle to play.

Very atmospheric! Excellent plot bunny as well.
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 28th, 2009 06:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm glad the atmosphere worked, because I had to cut so much out of this from the first draft to get it to 100 words, and I was afraid I'd lost the intention of the piece somewhere along the editing process.
telperion_15 From: telperion_15 Date: January 28th, 2009 08:34 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ooh, very atmospheric! Surely this is going to happen sooner or later?
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: January 28th, 2009 09:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
You have to think that they can't keep it secret forever. Sooner or later there is going to be an anomaly somewhere too public to hide, or somethng far too big and obvious is going to rampage around before they get control of it.

Given some of the rumours of the creatures we're getting in S3, I wonder how they're going to keep a lid on things for much longer. And how they're going to hanlde it when they finally have to go public.

Woah. I'd really like to see more of that. I think riot control might be in order...
Great stuff.

I suspect that police and military types were appearing out on the streets right as the announcement was being made.

Very nice, the tension and fear of what the 'new' world will bring.. more?
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: August 10th, 2009 06:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
thanks. I once wrote a fun and relatively positive version of what would happen if the anomalies became public knowledge, but I actually suspect it would be a complete nightmare and cause lots of civil unrest and would not go well for the team.
