Life on Earth started in the ocean. Every palaeontologist knows that. As a teenager, Connor loved the idea that the origins of life were the result of alien experiments. These days, his theories are a lot less fun.

Now he wonders if life was started by a random organism from the past, present or future straying through an anomaly into the sterile Precambrian ocean. What if life from Earth created life on Earth? Then life would be the universe’s biggest ever perpetual time-loop paradox; a freakish, fragile accident.

Sometimes, in the dark of night, Connor finds these thoughts rather frightening.

Oh, love this! Very Connor.

You were quick off the mark again! I dithered for a short while whether to write this as Cutter or Connor pov, but while Cutter might think of the possibilty of life starting that way, only Connor would think in terms of time-loop paradoxes.

And only Connor would lay awake at night and worry so much!

With someone like Connor, I suspect that sometimes that much intelligence is as much a curse as it is a blessing.

Definitely! An over-active brain *g*.

Actually, I find those thoughts rather frightening! Not to mention they give me a headache! *g*

Very cool take on the prompt.

*offers Telperion anti-temporal-paradox-headache aspirin*

I'd been having thoughts on this for quite a while, but never found an appropriate fic to voice them in until I saw this prompt, and then it was sudenly perfect.

Super-scary, as Connor might say! But very good :-)

Thanks. I wonder if Connor ever did finish that dissertation of his about aliens starting life on earth? This theory would make a great dissertation, but Cutter would be the only other person in academia who would ever be able to read it!

Oh cool and I agree with Connor, quite scary
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: August 20th, 2008 07:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks. It is kind of wierd and scary when you try to think about it too hard.

I always try not to think to hard about time loops and paradoxes, it tends to make my head want to implode. :)

I know that feeling!

Excellent drabble, and yes scary idea.
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: August 20th, 2008 09:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
That idea has been nagging away in the back of my mind for a while now. I wonder if it's something that the show's producers have thought of? Once you add anomalies to the equation of evolution, you get all sorts of interesting options for sudden radical bursts of evolution, or mass extinctions and such like.

This is an awesome take on the prompt. Poor Connor - those thoughts are frightening me too!
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: August 21st, 2008 07:12 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks. I seem to be doing a good line in scary drabbles recently!
rodlox From: rodlox Date: August 21st, 2008 04:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
nice idea, Connor.

anybody can get nightmares from other people; it takes intelligence (ie Connor) to give one'sself nightmares.

excellent drabble.

thanks, glad you liked. Poor Connor, sometimes he's just too smart for his own good.

I missed this!
This is very much a Connor thought. He may not be his own grandfather he may be *everybody's* grandfather!

He may not be his own grandfather he may be *everybody's* grandfather!

Now *that* is a very scary thought!

Oh, Connor, little soul. *hugs him* This was fab, and I don't know how I missed it before... :)
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: August 25th, 2008 04:17 pm (UTC) (Link)
Bless him, he does worry about some strange things sometimes *pets him*.
knitekat From: knitekat Date: July 31st, 2009 09:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
Very Connor, he does think too much at times for his own peace of mind.
deinonychus_1 From: deinonychus_1 Date: August 2nd, 2009 11:26 am (UTC) (Link)
I do like that idea of the origins of life on earth being a time loop pradox, and I bet Connor would be just the person who'd think of something like that.
rodlox From: rodlox Date: September 24th, 2010 04:18 am (UTC) (Link)
that would make it very fragile...or reinforcing, buffering(?).

very nice thoughts you've brought up.

and a good Connor.

brava!
