The western sky blazed with red, gold and orange long after the sun had set below the horizon.

“It’s beautiful,” Jess commented, poking the campfire.

“Do you remember that bang we heard a few days ago?” Connor said, thinking out loud. “I think that might have been a volcano erupting somewhere. A really, really big one. All that dust in the atmosphere causes sunsets like that. They saw them after Krakatoa in the 19th century.”

“But we’re safe here, right?”

Connor shivered. He knew spectacular sunsets weren’t the only side effects of volcanic dust in the atmosphere.

“Winter is coming.”

Hee! Yep, volcanoes are very cool. Not so much when you're stuck in the middle of a nuclear winter caused by one, though!

Lovely contrast between how beautiful the landscape is and what it actually means for Connor and Jes.

Thanks. Yes, it's lovely to look at, not so much to survive through the side effects.
